#LAAccess March 2017 – ACCESSING THE GRACE OF GOD

Wednesday 1 March 2017
Reading: Romans 11

Show Them Mercy

VERSE: “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.” Romans 11:22-23

Being a parent exposes your walk with Christ, especially when your child/ren misbehave and we are ready with consequences. Or when you’ve shown mercy and the same, or another, misbehaviour occurs – ‘God of mercy’ has a whole different meaning. But, as my daughter becomes older I find I am employing the ‘you will get what you do not deserve’ approach now that she is grasping accountability, responsibility and true repentance. It has taught me how much I take for granted God’s mercy on me, which is easily forgotten when I want my daughter to feel the consequences of her actions. Instead, showing mercy counterattacks pride and self-pity, which we often feel when we know we are wrong and rightfully facing a consequence and keeps us further from accessing God.

We who believe possess a beautiful gift. And this gift is miraculous in that it can be shared without diminishing its worth to us. This gift is our knowledge of God, Christ and the Holy Spirit. We who have been steadfast to not fully waiver in our faith are accountable for the many who are wavering.

God’s Divine response (Rom 11:4) to us is that we receive what we do not deserve – access to God’s Grace, Love and Mercy. It is not that we did anything extraordinary to receive it. Therefore we pray for one another, so when those we know in Christ falter or ‘fall away” we are not quick to judge. The instruments to employ against this spiritual war is love, patience and endurance. We will be abused, ridiculed, stereotyped and tested, but we know ‘God is able to graft them in again’.
