October: THE WORD OF GOD
Reading: Ezekiel 20, Psalm 87

What’s Your Idol?

Text: “And I said to them, Cast away the detestable things your eyes feast on, every one of you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.” Ezekiel 20:7 (ESV)

I have often wondered why certain books of the Old Testament, those with all its gloom, doom and fury, were included in the bible. They did not appear to me to be of much relevance to me – a new creation who is under the new covenant. Now, I think differently. The modern day Christian seems to face similar challenges as the children of Israel did, and the message preached then is still valid today.

The children of Israel refused to leave their idols and obey the instructions of God; in spite of how much God had revealed of Him to them and to their fathers (ancestors). God kept admonishing them using several prophets to ask them to repent of their idolatry. And God, in his loving kindness, then sent us His son to die a humiliating death in order to save us from our sins.
Have we like the Israelites despised His love and still pursue our idols: money, sex, position, influence?

Whatever causes us to act against God’s word today is an idol and the message of the prophets remains relevant in our present day: cast away those idols and obey God so that you may live. We are fortunate to have a better covenant in Christ Jesus and we ought to lay aside every idol, sin and any thing that we have exalted in our lives besides God.

LEARN and APPLY: We have the Holy Spirit as an ever-present helper. Let us take advantage of God’s grace and mercy and cast away all that offends Him.

Pray: Dear Lord, we lay aside everything we have made an idol. We worship you as the only true God of our lives and we do not regard any other god besides you in Jesus name, amen.
