Waiting For The Penitent

TEXT: “…the more I called to him, the more he turned away…how can I abandon you…my heart will not let me do it…” Hosea 11: 2-8 (Good News)

Research shows that the conflicts between parents and their adolescents are caused by the teenager seeking independence to express their individuality while parents seek to protect and ensure responsibility. These boundaries set by parents are usually given out of love for their child. Likewise, our parent-child relationship with God, and His absolute love for us, is not based on who we are but on who He is.

In Hosea 11, we can see God’s parental nature. He calls, and as adolescents seeking adventure, we would rather visit the playground of Baal. He shows us love and patience yet we treat Him with contempt. Doing what we think is best and ‘insisting on turning away’ from Him (Hosea 11:6-7), yet He will not give up on us nor punish us because His heart will not allow Him. (Hos 11:8)

Like a gracious and patient parent, God desires that we let go of our adolescent defiance and come into His embrace. (Ezekiel 18:23; 18:32)

LEARN and APPLY: Remember that the Lord’s name is an excellent safe refuge (Psalm 8). He knows our desire to be independent and unique, and through Christ we can do this and more (Ps. 8:6).

Pray: Faithful Father, thank You for Your love that is everlasting. Please be gracious to me and forgive my obstinacy at causing You heartache. I repent and come to You for forgiveness in Jesus’ name, Amen
