Unprofitable Gist!

Text: ‘But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.‘ 2 Timothy 2:16 (KJV)

My greatest challenge as a Christian is watching what comes out of my mouth. I noticed that after I’ve played host to certain friends and engaged in ‘catching up gist’ or unguarded talks and gossip, I would feel so empty and lost, becoming unable to pray and study God’s word for a while. And it would take sessions of prayers and praises to be able to feel God’s presence again. This is because whenever negative, vile and sinful words proceed out of our mouth, we disengage the Holy Ghost and He will simply move away until we confess and repent.

With our tongue we can speak life into dead situations and watch them come alive and also be able to speak death into flourishing situations and watch them decease. The war with our tongue is a war we should win daily by consciously bringing all our conversations under the scrutiny of God’s word (Eph. 4:29) – our conversations should be edifying and bring grace to the hearers.

If we hope to see good days and truly enjoy life, we should refrain from vile, sinful and evil talk (1Peter 3:10). Others might be doing it but you, as a Christian, are prohibited. The bible tells us that no matter how religious we appear to be, if we cannot bridle our tongue, our religion is in vain (James 1:26).

LEARN and APPLY: Put a spiritual sieve over your mouth and make sure that when you meet your usual ‘gist partners’ that they realise the Holy Ghost has taken over your mouth and you can no longer indulge in evil talk.

Prayer Focus:
Lord, help us speak right so that our hearers may know the joy of speaking under the influence of the Holy Ghost in Jesus’ name. Amen.
