True Wisdom
TEXT: “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” James 3:17 (ESV)

There are many things in our environment to make us believe that wisdom is actually wrong. In fact, the bible calls it wickedness, and rebukes us to stay away from such thoughts. I think it is beautiful that today’s reading reminds us that wise people can only be identified by their good conduct, and not by selfishness or the ability to ‘outsmart’ the next guy.

It is impossible to be wise without God’s grace. We can at best be ‘less selfish’ than others, or be ‘a little kind’ in our consideration of others. But we need God, the One who forgives all our iniquities, to purify our hearts and to work righteousness and justice though us in all things.

Through Christ, it is possible that we become truly wise, unto Him and unto our fellow men.

LEARN and APPLY: Psalm 103: 8-10 is an example of true wisdom: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love… He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever… He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.” What a great lesson to learn!

Pray: Thank You dear Lord for your wise examples. Help us to grow in the true wisdom, which you have called us into. Amen.
