Test All Spirits

Text: “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.” 1 John 4:1 (NKJV)

It is very easy to get carried away and tossed about by every wind of doctrine. I once heard of a “church” where members were banned from reading the Bible. That meant they had to rely solely on what their Pastor taught, which is a total deviation from the Word of God – we are to meditate on the Word day and night (Joshua 1:8, Job 22:22, Psalm 1). How can one meditate on what he/she hasn’t even read?
Believers must remain sober and vigilant so as not to fall into the trap of the enemy.

How do we test all Spirits? Apostle John provides an easy to implement litmus test:

1. Do they acknowledge that Jesus Christ came in the flesh – 1 John 4:2. Jesus came to earth in human form, was tempted as we are, yet without sin. He was crucified, he died, was buried and behold He rose on the third day. If this truth isn’t acknowledged, then such a Spirit is not of God.

2. Do they speak as of the world? Do they speak words that the itching ears of their listeners want to hear? 1 John 4:2 says they speak as of the world and the world hears them. They are friends of the world – remember that friendship with the world is enmity with God. (James 4:4)

3. Do they express their love for God by loving their brother? If we do not love our brother whom we see, how can we claim to love God who we cannot see.

And the most important test must begin with us. Before you can test any Spirit, know the Word yourself!

LEARN and APPLY: A carrier of the Spirit of God will display certain characteristics. By their fruit, you shall know them (Matthew 7:16). Test all Spirits using the Word of God as the examiner.

Pray: Lord! Activate the Spiritual gift of discernment in me that I may test all Spirits, in Jesus’ name Amen.
