Sustaining Faith

TEXT: Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; Hebrews 3:12

The true test of parenting is when you leave your child alone. It reveals their inner nature because we all know that under the watchful eye of parents most children are well behaved. The moment they’re alone is when you know if all those years of patience and tolerance have paid off or if they will ‘fall your hand’. The same applies to our depth of faith. When we are alone, are we true to the core of our hearts, and minds, in our belief in God? Do we still believe God can heal? Save the lost? Transform destinies?

Trusting God, His word and promises is a continual process. It is also one that should not be done alone. Faith is about community and rubbing minds with the right people. As ‘partakers of the heavenly calling’ it is true we have a duty to one another, but we owe it to ourselves to make sure that we first tackle the state of our hearts and minds. Like children, it is very easy to present a ‘good image’ in the midst of others. However, if in our quiet space, there exists a seed of doubt that God’s word has passed away or doesn’t seem to apply to us then we are at risk of unbelief.

Unbelief is dangerous not just to yourself but also to those with whom you fellowship or souls you win (1 Cor. 11:27-34), and Hebrews 3 issues a warning – be aware of what is in your heart.

No matter how long it takes or how hard the journey, stand strong and trust God.

LEARN and APPLY: Create for yourself a support group. Unbelief will settle if there is no one to exhort the word of God in your life everyday, and Hebrews 3:13 presents a practical example in sustaining our faith in God.

Pray:
Search me my God and root out any thing that may cause unbelief in You. Forgive me when I have not given You my complete trust and help me to share Your mercy to lift up my brothers and sisters at risk of unbelief. Amen.
