Supplications, Prayers, Intercessions, and Thanksgivings

TEXT: ‘First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all people.’ 1 Timothy 2:1 (ESV)

Today’s reading reminds us that talking to God can achieve what we all seek most for ourselves, family and nations – peace and national serenity. And if we don’t see this, we may want to ask, when is the right time to supplicate, pray, intercede, or give thanks? The answer is simply, ‘at all times’.

Paul shares the wisdom of standing before God in communion on behalf of all people, whether in supplication, prayer, intercession, or thanksgiving. One instance is ‘for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.’ Then Psalm 75 enlists reasons why God deserves our regular thanks: He keeps steady the pillars of the earth (v3), He is the one who promotes people from one level to another higher level (v6), He is the one who rightly judges wicked people and crowns righteous people (v7, 8, 10). Isn’t this what we want for the leaders in our country?

In our personal relationships, the beauty of ‘lifting holy hands without anger or quarrelling’ helps us to practice forgiveness at all times.

Since we have God as our Father, and Jesus as our Saviour, let us regularly keep the communication lines open, and watch God perform wonders in and through us.

LEARN and APPLY: Bearing grudges whilst communing with God doesn’t please Him, and is unacceptable to Him.

Prayer Focus:

Help us dear Lord to be focused on regularly bringing all things to your table through daily communion with you, amen.
