Simply Passing Through

Text: ‘So we have been greatly encouraged in the midst of our troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith’. 1 Thessalonians 3:7 (NLT)

Whenever I’m going through a challenge, I’m often tempted to believe that the unpleasant situation is as a result of something I did wrong or my lack of faith. However, I’ve also learnt that challenges could be a sign of effective Christian living and can help build our character.

Paul and the brethren with him were in the midst of troubles and suffering, yet they were encouraged and strengthened by the faith of the Thessalonian church.
This brings Isaiah 43:2 to mind, ‘When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee’. The storms we experience are not to drown us, that fire is not consuming us. We are simply passing through.

As people who are in Christ, the Holy Spirit in us is as our advantage. One of His roles is to be our strength. When His grace is present: challenges become opportunities, problems cease to be. God’s grace takes us beyond our human limitations.

LEARN and APPLY: Let’s avoid the temptation of making what we are going through become our destination. We are simply passing through. Don’t camp there, draw strength from the Holy Spirit and move forward.

Prayer Focus:
Dear Lord, we thank you for the gift of your word and the Holy Spirit. We receive strength for the journey ahead and we declare that we will never be drowned by any storm of life in Jesus name! Amen.
