Self-Deceived Child Of God?

TEXT: “Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to His word; instead, put into practice” James 1:22 (Good news)

While growing up my father always asked what I learned from stories shared at Sunday school. Whenever I erred, he was quick to ask if that was how the bible character I l had earned about behaved. I soon understood that it was not enough to listen to bible stories; rather it was applying the lessons in my after church activities.

This also applies to God’s Word. What do we do with it? Do we read the scriptures to satisfy our emotions, fulfil some religious commitments, or be vast in doctrinal knowledge? Now, these reasons are not bad. However, they would be wrong if we study the scriptures for these reasons only.

In today’s reading, James reminds us that we must be doers of the word and not merely hearers (or readers even). The Word of God should become an instructional manual to be desperately obeyed, and acted on like the elder son in Matthew 21:28-30. Let us internalize what we learn and begin to apply them in our daily routines until they become second nature to us. This word is able to save us (v. 21b) and its application has a blessing attached! (James 1: 25b)

LEARN and APPLY: I study the Word and put it into practice. This means my life and living must reflect whatever I have learned in the Word of God. I cannot be saved and sanctified, and live on my own desires without regard to what the Word (Jesus) says. If I do this, I will be a ‘self-deceived’ child of God.

Pray: Faithful Father, help me not to deceive myself. I pray that my will is swallowed up in Thine and I would be able to do what Your word tells me to do in Jesus’ name. Amen!
