Reject False Teaching

Text:  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4

With the advent of social media has come social media evangelism. This is where preachers, ordained and self styled, broadcast their opinion of the word of God. It’s not a bad thing as Jesus asked us to preach the gospel to all nations. and social media is an effective tool for doing that. The danger lies where preachers teach a message that is not consistent with the bible and people heed that message (to their detriment).

Paul tells Timothy that a time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching but gravitate towards false teaching that will suit their itching ears. In other words, Christians will desire preachers who will tell them exactly what they want to hear about God’s word without regard to the truth or falsehood of that teaching. Timothy is advised to be watchful – we’ll do ourselves a world of good to take that advice.

The first step to being a watchful Christian is taking time to read the bible and not become absolutely dependent upon a preacher’s interpretation of it. Next is to always rely on the Holy Spirit for an understanding of the bible as we study it. This practice places us in a good position to detect false teaching that is contrary to the word of God, and reject such teaching.

LEARN and APPLY: Read your bible everyday, not just a devotional or message, so when we come across bible teaching (especially social media evangelism) we act like the Berean Christians (Acts 17:10), who after hearing the word went back to examine the scriptures to verify if the word preached to them was true.

Prayer Focus:
We thank You Father for the word given to us. We pray for wisdom to apply the word as it is and to resist every false teaching and interpretation. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who will always bring to our remembrance what the word says, in Jesus name, amen.
