On The Contrary, Bless!

Text: ‘Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.’ 1 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

Have you ever been in a position where you could avenge the wrong someone did to you? Well, I have, and it took exceptional grace to resist the temptation. We all have been wronged before and, more often than not, the opportunity presents itself to pay people back in their own coin. What we do with those opportunities says a lot about our spiritual maturity.

In the Lord’s Prayer, we ask God to forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us. If we want our sins forgiven, we have to forgive others. Simple. God has also said that He has the monopoly on vengeance (Rom 12:19), do you intend to take the place of God, and do His job?

1 Peter 3 reminds us to bless those who have reviled and done evil to us. It asks us to go beyond forgiving evil and requires us to act positively towards the evildoer. Let us remember that we have been called to bless those who curse us and do good to those who hate us (Matt 5:44).

LEARN and APPLY: Think of someone who offended you in the past month. Have you forgiven him/her? Honestly, what would you do if you had a chance to repay that person for the wrong done to you? If you are a ‘doer’ of God’s word, you would forgive and bless that person instead.

Pray: Dear Lord, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Grant us the grace to bless those who have hurt us, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
