Oil And Water

Text: ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ Revelations 2:29

Today’s reading is like meeting a person so in line with God, and you cannot help but fear their gaze piercing into the darkest regions of your soul. Both Psalm 123 and Revelations 2 highlight the darker side of the church – the contemptuous, the loveless, the corrupt, the hypocrites and the compromiser. Yet, if you allow these words to take root, they are wonderfully ready to love you into freeing yourself from self-destruction.
And many of us have displayed some of these traits at some point, but that’s ok. What matters is our awareness of their existence and whether we have become sensitive in the spirit to these weeds of destruction to challenge ourselves, and to conquer them.

As we focus on what we need to change to live a life that is consecrated to God, allow the Holy Spirit to reveal such weeds in us, which are at risk of spoiling God’s garden’s and stifling our fruitfulness to Him.

Jesus has gifts for those willing to endure and overcome these darker sides of our nature. He says that he will give us: access to eat from the tree of life (v. 11); a hidden manna, a new name (v. 17); power over the nations, the morning star (vv. 27-28).

Like oil and water cannot combine, neither can we compromise our faith.

Stand firm, you shall overcome!

LEARN and APPLY: Revelations 2 reveals the broad spectrum of regressing in faith. We have to be alert to times when we behave like these churches in our daily experiences and be conscious of our actions (works) that are displeasing to God.

Pray: Father, open our ears to hear the truth of our ways that displease You. Strengthen us that we may overcome and reap the fruits and bless others in Jesus’ name. Amen
