Maintain Your Good Works

Text: “This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.” Titus 3:8

Recently, I taught my 5 year-old cousin a song, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven (Matthew 5:16)” She asked me, ‘Auntie Eloho, what do good deeds mean?’ I replied, “They are the nice things we do for others that show we love God and that He lives in us.” As I responded, I was reminded that failure to do good works also meant that we were neither being Christ-like nor showing that He lives in us.

As we walk with God and become Christ-like via sanctification, good works are further evidence. Our Christ nature ensures that as Christ was, so are we in this world. The bible records that everywhere Jesus went he was doing ‘good’, and we should too. We could easily neglect these deeds but Titus 3:8 encourages us, who have believed in God, to be careful to maintain good works as these things are good and profitable unto ALL men.

Whenever we get caught up in our desire for acts of faith and power, be encouraged to maintain (not start and stop) good works. They are IMPACTFUL!!! Think about Mother Theresa, Dorcas in Acts 9:36-43 or the acts mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 25. People can easily relate our sanctification (Christ-likeness) to our testimony of good works through Christ.

Are you feeling a tad inept? Please don’t be. Ephesians 2:8-10 says we are God’s handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared us in advance to do. This means that all we need already lies inside of us by the Spirit; we just need to ACT them out by yielding to the Spirit.

LEARN and APPLY: What kind of good deeds would people remember you for? If you passed on today, what would be their testimony concerning you?

Pray: Father, help me to be sensitive to the leading of your Spirit. Give me a heart of compassion to maintain good works that would shine as light in darkness. AMEN.
