June 23 – Proverbs 23: Blessed Hope

Blessed Hope
Proverbs 23

Text: Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;
For surely there is a hereafter,
And your hope will not be cut off (vv. 17-18).

Learn and Apply: I have often quipped that my permanent residence is in heaven. It was my own way of focusing on things above, not on things on the earth. It is easy to focus on material things and forget that there is a hereafter, that we are pilgrims on earth. We can get carried away with doing our own things that we fail to do the work of God.

Solomon here warns for us not to envy sinners, their sudden success, their unabashed loyalty to sin and the devil, their brash demeanor in doing evil. No, we should not be like them, we should not walk in their ways or envy their accomplishments. Our hearts should be on life after now, we should do things that impact on eternity. We should be zealous for God, winning sinners to God and strengthening the faith of the saints. Such should be our mission.

And there is a reward for focusing on the right things. Our hope, the Bible says, shall not be cut off. We shall wear the crown, we shall hear the words, Good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of thy Lord (Matthew 25:21).

And you will hear it in Jesus name.

Pray: Thank you Father for your loving kindness and faithfulness. Help me to focus on the things that matter, so that I will receive the crown of faithfulness, in Jesus name.
