God Our Refuge And Strength

TEXT: “Though the cherry trees don’t blossom and the strawberries don’t ripen, though the apples are worm-eaten and the wheat fields stunted, though the sheep pens are sheepless and the cattle barns empty, I’m singing joyful praise to God. I’m turning cartwheels of joy to my saviour God. Counting on God’s rule to prevail, I take heart and gain strength. I run like a deer. I feel like I’m king of the mountain!’Habakkuk 3:17-19 MSG

Have you ever wondered where is God when tragedies happen? A few months after my year of Nigerian Youth service, my friend’s pastor, a young and vibrant pastor I must add, died from a road accident. This guy loved God and could not stop talking about Him. At the time, I remember asking ‘God is sovereign, why would He even allow the accident to happen in the first place?’

We have all heard similar stories and, sometimes, we are tempted to ask questions. I also remember a movie I watched too, called ‘Letters to God’. A little boy was diagnosed with brain cancer. His mum, a doctor and a Christian, could not save her own child, and the boy eventually died. Why will God allow bad things happen to good people? What’s supposed to happen to our faith? Our praise?

I can’t pretend to have all the answers but here’s what I do know, God is and always will be a good God. ‘Who (or what) shall separate us from the love of Christ?

LEARN and APPLY: In all these, we are more than conquerors!’ Satan cannot steal our joy, God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.

Pray: Help me Lord to always rely on your strength, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
