Discovering God

TEXT: “And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?” Jonah 4:11

Jonah had taken his relationship with God for granted. Although he carried out God’s will and brought the people of Ninevah to repentance, Jonah’s heart was not in it. He knew God so well (Jonah 4:2), but God had not penetrated Jonah’s heart.

Praise God for Christ Jesus, who teaches us to live by faith and not feelings as Jonah did. With Christ we should recognise the importance of bringing people to repentance and God’s everlasting mercy – forgiveness and love, no matter what they have done. With Christ, God becomes our personal friend, and we know friendships can influence who we are (Prov 27:9, Prov 27:17).

Knowing God intimately opens up the truth about ourselves and helps us to unlearn many things we have thought wrongly about who we are and our purpose on earth. So, in this month of September, do more than know the character of God, let God change you to become more like Him. Don’t take what you know of Him for granted and understand what it takes to please God in heart (Col. 3:23), as well as in deed.

God knows all about you, do you know all about Him?

LEARN and APPLY: God is Sovereign. God is Faithful. God knows Everything. God is Love. God is Merciful. God is All-Powerful.

Pray: You are Sovereign LORD and I want to know more of You, through Christ Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
