Carpe Diem!* (Seize The Day!)

Text: ‘For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.’ 1 Thessalonians 5:2 (ESV)

Recently, I had a health scare that caused me to visit the emergency room. I was in and out of hospital much more than I care for and the experience jolted, terrified and profoundly humbled me. Seeing people, just like me, struggle to breathe in the air that I take for granted grieved me. I too was in quite some distress until the doctors attended to me, and the entire affair caused me to see life a little differently. I found myself reordering my priorities. If I had ever been unclear about my mortality, or about the message that Apostle Paul is trying to send in today’s text, all of that changed as I saw reality for what it really is: our time on earth, even for the best of us, is very brief.

In the first few verses of 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul uses clear metaphors to describe just what it would be like for anyone who isn’t prepared for the end. He explains that we are much more than just flesh and blood – we are (primarily) spirits (1 Thess. 5:23); spirits that will be called to give an account when our Lord and Saviour returns to take us home.

Think about it. What are you not doing right now, that you would desire to do before you depart this earth? Are you doing anything specific to advance God’s kingdom?

LEARN AND APPLY: Irrespective of whether you’re in a relationship with Jesus or not, take a moment to reflect on your life and times. Pray to God for grace. Whatever you do, remember that a clarion call resonates loud and clear.

*Carpe Diem from a poem in ‘Odes’ by Horace (23 BC)

Prayer Focus:
Dear Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner who cannot make it to heaven without you. Please come into my heart and be my Lord. From today, help me to live for you and teach me to walk circumspectly so that I can fulfil your purpose for my life on earth. Amen.
