TEXT: But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. Obadiah 1:17 (KJV)

Whenever the bible gives a message of impending destruction to a nation, and I see a “but”, it gives me hope that even in the destruction, the safety of God’s people is sure.
Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, is a dramatic example of God’s response to anyone who will threaten or harm His children continuously. The Edomites gloated over Jerusalem’s trouble and felt secure. They were proud in their self-sufficiency. The bible warns that pride is the surest route to self-destruction (Proverbs 16:18) and they were simply fooling themselves because there is no lasting security apart from God.

Every day the media comments on disasters and killings around the world, “But upon Mount Zion (In Christ) shall be deliverance (Salvation). “There shall be holiness”, after we have received salvation, and we ought to live a holy and consecrated life worthy of our calling.

Let us take a cue from the Edomites and never rejoice at the misfortune of others even if we think they deserve it for God alone is judge.

“The house of Jacob shall possess their possession”, (Obadiah 1:17). Salvation is a full package. Living a consecrated life increases our capacity to receive and partake of the privileges, which has been made available to us in Christ, (2 Peter 1:3-8).

LEARN and APPLY: Let our security be in Mount Zion alone, for only He can supply true security.

Pray: Abba, we thank You! Our hope is built in you alone. Grant us the grace never to lose heart and to live a life worthy of our calling in Christ. Amen!
