#LAKings Devotional Day 2 by Adaobi Nwosu @_modiste

Putting God First

Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people? 1 Kings 3:9 (ESV)

Solomon could have asked for anything but he chose to ask for wisdom to lead God’s people. He chose God’s purpose over his wants. He put the spiritual before the carnal. God was so pleased with Solomon that He gave him riches and honour in addition to wisdom.

Everything we place ahead of God is an idol. We may not be as privileged as Solomon to have God visit us with a question; but everyday through our thoughts, words and actions God hears our answer to His question ‘what do you want?’

Matthew 6:33 tells us to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto us. ‘All these things’ there refers to every good thing we may desire in life. Solomon sought that which was relevant to God’s will for His people.

There is a plan and purpose for our lives that ultimately leads to the advancement of God’s kingdom. We can take a cue from Solomon and be eternally minded enough to put God’s kingdom first and other things second. We have our needs and desires but a fulfillment of them outside God’s purpose leaves us empty.

Prayer focus
Heavenly father I pray today that your plan and purpose is fulfilled in my life. I receive wisdom to place your will above mine in Jesus’ name, amen.
