INTRO to The Book of COLOSSIANS.

The key verse for the book of Colossians is found in Col. 2:9-10, for in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

Colossians was written to suppress wrong and destructive teaching that was creeping into the church at Colosse, a declining commercial center about 100 miles east of Ephesus. The false teaching involved adding ideas from other philosophies and religions, including paganism, strains of Judaism, and Greek thought, to the Christian faith. The heresy became known as Gnosticism, a religious approach which denied Christ as God and Savior. It emphasized a deeper knowledge of God, reserved for a special few. This *superior knowledge* threathened the Christian faith and believers’ dependence on Christ alone for the fullness of life they desired.

Even though Paul never traveled to Colosse, he wrote to the church to combat this threat by emphasizing the supremacy and all-sufficiency of Christ. Jesus was God, and His sacrificial death on the cross for sin was complete. He rules over the universe. He has authority over all powers. He gives fullness of life.

The issue that Paul dealt with in this letter still exists today, though it goes by other names. Religions add more to the Christian faith and deny the deity of Christ. We should beware of false teachings and look toward the sufficiency of Christ alone for salvation and fullness of life.
