O God . . . give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless. —Psalm 108:11-12
This is the age of information, the age of ‘How To’ books. You can find nearly every kind of “How To” imaginable online. In fact, I read somewhere that a quick search of one online bookstore revealed 32,000 different ‘How To’ titles!
But what happens when you can’t find that ‘How To’ you need the most? Think about those pressing questions for which Google has no sustainable answers. When the ‘How To’ books of life don’t bring you what you are so desperately seeking, like the Psalmist, we come to the place where we realize that the help of man is useless. It is so humbling when there seems to be help everywhere yet you have no answers, at least you don’t have the answers that matter the most.
So what do we do?
First we realize that God is our only source of help like the Psalmist said, ‘O God, give us help from trouble!’
Secondly, we need to rely solely on Him and have no expectations of man or feelings of disappointment that men could not help.
As a believer in Christ, remember His promise never to leave or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
Realize the remarkable truth that the Holy Spirit is praying for you. Romans 8:26 says that the Spirit understands your difficulties when you cannot even express them, and He prays to the Father for you.
Turn to the Lord in the midst of your difficulty, for He is your refuge and strength. When trouble hits, He’s there with you to calm your fears (Psalm 46:1-2).
Surround yourself with the word, meditate on it. All you need is one word from God opened to your spirit so you can hold on to it amid your dark season.
With help from God, you can get through even your toughest challenges.
But even when help seems to be delayed, we should have the attitude of Job. We should be able to say, even though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Our strength for the present and hope for the future is not based on the stability of our own perseverance but on the fidelity of God.
Our troubles seem smaller when we ponder the greatness of God.
