September 2 – Judges 19

The Great King
Judges 19

Text: And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah. Judges 19:1

Learn and Apply: An account is here given of a Levite who had a concubine, or wife, for he is called a son in law (v. 5). His wife had run off from him and played the whore in her father’s house, and thus he went after her to plead with her to return to him. Thankfully, she did, until they met with harm along the way by the hands certain evil men of the tribe of Benjamin.

We see how a people who had been blessed so much by God became so full of evil, everyone was going their own way and doing what seemed good in their eyes. Indeed there was no king in Israel, yet there is God – the great King of Israel, who visits everyone according to their works. People may embrace lawlessness because the eyes of the government are blind to their acts; they must remember that the Judge of the whole earth is watching, and if they do not receive judgment in this life, they will in the next.

Knowing that God is the Overall Judge of the whole earth should fill our heart with confidence in this world.

Pray: Thank you Father for your grace and mercy. Help us to walk in your ways and keep your judgement in this world. In Jesus name.
