Paul’s Prayer

Text: And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ,’ Philippians 1:9-10 (NKJV)

Paul’s prayers and his confident assertions about God inspire me, such as his statement in verse 6. If God started in you, He will continue to perfect and bring it to full completion. That’s the kind of confidence we ought to have in God. And every now and then, as I desire Paul’s spirit, I pray some of his prayers, especially verse 9-10 (AMP).

Paul prays further for us to ‘learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences], and that you may be untainted and pure and unerring and blameless [so that with hearts sincere and certain and unsullied, you may approach] the day of Christ [not stumbling nor causing others to stumble].’

We are often tempted by our flesh to see as men see and our inability to distinguish moral differences often leaves us making decisions that corrupt us and make us stumble whilst we lead others to stumble too. Considering our everyday challenges, praying for discernment reinforces how apt it is.

That’s a prayer that I think we need as believers in this time, and age.

Learn and Apply: Build your relationship with God through the Holy Spirit so we can approve what is excellent and of real value according to eternal standards, not worldly, ephemeral standards.

Prayer Focus:
Lord, give me grace by Your Spirit to learn to sense, to approve and prize and to distinguish so that I may be blameless with a sincere heart and approach the day of Christ standing and not causing another to stumble. Amen.
