August 28 – Judges 14

Come Home
Judges 14

Text: And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Judges 14:19 KJV

Learn and Apply: Samson had organized a feast for the young men of Timnah, more like a traditional wedding to celebrate his acquiring a wife for himself. At the ceremony however he puts forth a riddle for the young men to decipher. Having tried, and failing to understand the riddle, they threatened his wife, who later betrayed him to her people. This greatly angered Samson, causing him to leave the town back to his father’s house.

Trials are good if they make us return home to God. In our quest for friendship with the people of the world, we can become too attached to them that we forget our values and principles and even forget God. It is for such times that James tells us, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience (James 1:2‭-‬3 ).

Let us not murmur when things do not go our way, rather let that issue take us home to Jesus, in prayer and faith.

Pray: Thank you Father for your rod and staff which instruct and comfort us. Help us to stay close to you, no matter the trials we face in Jesus name.
